Qualifying classification of barley and malt.Peer-reviewed article

J. JANÁČEK

The article deals with the design, functions and specific features of a laboratory, fully automatic malting line, developed at the Research Institute of Grain Crops for testing and classifying brewing barley. The technology applied to tests and an extreme accuracy of all the functions of the plant secure minimum deviations of data obtained at tests from actual ones. All the criteria applied to specify the quality of malt can be correctly ascertained. Some questions of after-harvest ripening are discussed and possible effect upon errors in conclusions, derived from the results of micromalting experiments, underlined. Conventional testing methods are criticized as unreliable ones. Instead, modern instruments should be used, or, preferably, automatic laboratory lines.
