Efficiency of sedimentation in whirlpool tanks.Peer-reviewed article

T. LEJSEK

The efficiency of sedimentation in a 300 hl whirlpool tanks has been studied to ascertain the settling of sludge on the bottom of the tank and relation between the flow velocity of incoming wort, consistency of sludge and clarification efficiency. The tank was fitted with cocks for taking samples from various points of the tank. The following criteria were applied to evaluate the process: clarity of wort, sludge separation rate (for coarse sludge) and losses of extract in settled sludge. To obtain satisfactory clarity the sedimentation process must last 40 minutes. Gradual settling continues some 60 minutes more. The intake velocity was controlled and the best results from the 5 - 15 m/sec range were obtained with 10 m/sec rate. The pumping phase should not exceed 20 minutes.
