Continuous cultivation of microorganisms in installations with partial medium recirculation. Part. II.Peer-reviewed article

V. ŠIMEK, F. ŠTROS

In the first part of their article [see Kvasný průmysl (3)] the authors analyzed the concentration of medium, paying attention only to inhibitors present in the liquid phase. They also presented the balance of waste water. The second part of the article deals with a specific system of recirculation characterized by the presence of inhibitors both in liquid and gaseous phases. Since it is extremely difficult to find in available literature any reliable values of activity coefficients required for calculating the percentage of inhibitor escaping with air, the authors outline the method which can be applied to measure and calculate the value of coefficient k1 for a laboratory fermenter. By applying the method the authors determine the losses of alcohol escaping from fermenter with air. In the closing paragraphs the authors evaluate their experience, compare cultivation with and without recirculation, describe regulation of biochemical processes in steady state and give instruction, how to ensure optimum intensification of manufacturing processes. They also analyze various alternatives of processes in which inhibitors take part in biochemical reactions and specify conditions for equilibrium of inhibitor concentration.
