Yeast cultivation on ethanol with oxygen limitation and nutristat control.Peer-reviewed article

Using a continuous cultivation of yeasts on ethanol with a nutristat control and oxygen limitation it was found that with a change in dilution or growth rate, respectively, the basic culture parameters are changed, too. A decrease of growth rate manifested itself in a decrease of biomass yield and productivity and in a rise of a specific consumption of oxygen. The worse culture parameters observed at lower growth rates are elucidated by an increased consumption of energy or a substrate, respectively, which is used for a maintenance of the yeast cells. The results obtained in a continuous cultivation with the nutristat control and oxygen limitation served for a calculation of maintenance coefficients m and theoretical maximum yield coefficient for both the yeast strains used. For the yeast Candida ethanolica it was mmax = 0,0437 g ethanol per g cell dwt per hour and Yx/S = 0,8. For the yeast Torulopsis ethanolitolerans it was mmax = 0,040 g ethanol per g cell dwt per hour and Yx/S = 0,83.
