The article deals with the pollution of rivers in Europe caused by sewage, as well as by industrial waste water. Special attention is paid to Czechoslovak rivers and the sources of pollution in various industrial branches. The efficiency of existing industrial and municipal sewage works is analysed and their further development outlined. Measures taken by fermenting industry to prevent river pollution are discussed in detail.(In Czech, English summary only)

The author presents the results of competition in 1961, applying not only agricultural but also analytic criteria, which are important for breweries and malting plants. He underlines the specific properties and advantages of selected Czechoslovak sorts of malting barley.
