Bioengineering characteristics of sulphite liquors. I. Rheological properties of different types of liquors.Peer-reviewed article

The measurement of rheological properties of natrium-, calcium- and magnesium-bisulphite liquors as a function of the soluble dry matter concentration was performed. The measurements were made at temperatures of 30 and 35 °Cwhich are the limiting ones from the standpoint of a subsequent process of a yeast culture in these media. Rheograms were obtained using a viscosimeter Rheomat 30 (Contraves,Switzerland) with a system MS-O. It was found that in a range of 8 to 50% of the soluble dry matter concentration, all types of sulphite liquors used showed-out the Newtonian behaviour. Up to the soluble dry matter concentration of about 15%, the dynamic viscosity was almost identical in the all sulphite liquors used. The same was found at the concentrations above 38%. With increasing soluble dry matter concentrations the temperature affected the value of viscosity more significantly. At the low dry matter concentrations of about 12-15%, the value of viscosity was not dependent either on a type of the sulphite liquor nor on a type of wood materials.
