Possibilities of shortening the dormancy of barley.Peer-reviewed article

The article deals with the results of experiments aimed at increasing the germinating ability of barley in the stage of afterharvest ripening. For this purpose an effective treatment has been developed improving the permeability of grain hull to oxygen, which is vital for accelerated ripening. By combining the favourable effect of acid ammonium fluoride, aeration, spraying and drying, a new technology has been developed securing full germination of all the barley varieties requiring long dormancy. With barley of the 1960 harvest normal germination was observed in the fourth week of the ripening period, i. e. three weeks after the harvest. The treatment consists of the following operations: steeping in a 0,0025 % solution of NH4HF2 lasting 8 hours, rest period lasting 48 hours with subsequent spraying to bring the moisture content to the desired level.
