To verify the conclusions derived from some recent research works experiments were made with introducing the steeping operation straight into the scheme employed in production lines incorporating shifting heaps. In the first stage lasting 6 hours a batch of barley was steeped, washed and brought to the 31 % moisture content. Spraying in the shifting heap raised the moisture content to 43 %. The described steeping method permits to reduce substantially the water consumption by some 50 %, preserving the required quality of malt and to save more than 2 million crowns in capital investments on a malt-house with 30 000 t per annum capacity.
