The article deals with some new views on roles of embryo and aleurone layer in the germination process of malting barley. The embryo produces substances belonging to the gibberellins group which diffuse into endosperm and bear upon the formation of enzymes in the aleurone layer. The aleurone layer is therefore the main source of enzymes, not embryo. The aleurone layer is a live tissue.
