Application of tetracykline for suppression of bacterial contamination of yeast during its determination process.Peer-reviewed article

J. ŠAVEL, V. KURZOVÁ

The committee of brewing industry for yeast and microbiology recommends to use tetracycline whenever determining yeast, since it can efficiently suppress bacterial contamination. In a proper concentration, i.e. 30-50 µg per one mi tetracycline prevents propagation of bacteria in wort and sweet wort agar media without affecting yeast growth. Very good results have been achieved also in cultivation of microorganisms on membrane filters. Even in the 100 µg/ml concentration tetracycline does not reduce the number of yeast colonies when pure culture stems [ Saccharomyces carlsbergensis] as well as other stems of yeast are being inoculated.
