The results of a comprehensive series of field trials show that excessively high rates of nitrogenous fertilizers have negative effects upon the properties of barley and malt. Yields depend on many factors, especially on weather conditions in vegetation period and high rates of nitrogen cannot be always effective. Under certain conditions, which were e.g. given in 1972, nitrogen even lowered the yields. In 1973 high rates of nitrogenous fertilizer have practically no positive effects. Trials lasting there years confirm that high rates of nitrogen, especially if the fertilizer is applied at two different vegetation stages, the later of which is the shooting one, deteriorate important properties of malt. The percentage of albumins is higher, whereas extract is lower. High rates of nitrogenous fertilizer to not guarantee better yields, but badly affect the quality of all varieties of malting barley and malt.
