Indirect Methods of Automatic Substrate Dosing for Aerobic Cultivation of Microorganismus.Peer-reviewed article

F. ŠTROS, L. ADÁMEK, M. RUT

In fed batch cultivations  or in  continuous cultivations under the limit of oxygen it is advantageous to add substrate in doses related to the growth rate of microorganisms. The concentration of nutritive substrate in medium must be high enough to enable a non retarded growth but must not exceeded certain limits above which may cause undesirable metabolic processes. Beside methods based on chemical and physical properthies of some substrates indirect methods can be practical, too. So e. g. automatic dosing of a carbon source can be based on changes of cultivation parameters caused by the drop of substrate concentration  under the critical value. Among parameters reacting both quickly and markedly are: increased concentration of dissolved oxygen, sudden change of the redox potential, change in he composition of exhalated gases and higher retention of air.
