Biotin was first isolated and identified as a yeas growth factor in 1935. Since then, its biological role, structure, and mechanism of action have been investigated vigorously. Biotin is an essential cofactor for a small number of enzymes that have diverse metabolic functions. In this connection, this review deal with the development of our knowledge of the biochemical processes dependent of our knowledge of the biochemical processes dependent on biotin, biosynthesis of biotin, biotin vitamers and cellular transport of biotin. Attention is also poid to the effects of biotin deficiency, especially in relation to the industrial cultivation of yeasts.
