Economy in an application of nonasbestos materials in beer filtration.Peer-reviewed article

R. SHACKLETON, I. GLYNN

Asbestos and cellulose formed a material from which filter plates for pressure filtration were made. These filter plates were used in the filtration of beer, wine, and other non-alcoholic beverages. With respect to the fact that asbestos has cancerogenic effect, other materials of suitable properties are sought at present. British establishment of Carlson, which belongs to the concern APV, develops series of the plates that are unobjectionable from the hygienic standpoint. In addition, these plates have the same filtration properties as those from asbestos. These plates work on the principle of deep filtration. The particles are captured in the plate by the action of electropotential forces. The principle is described in details. With respect to the components used for a construction of plats, the plates have higher resistance and service life in comparison to those of asbestos. The plates are produced in all sizes and therefore can replace asbestos plates in present filter apparatuses of all the manufactures. The results of experimental tests performed in Allied Breweries in cooperation with the Research Institute of Brewing in Great Britain are described.
