Corncobs coarsely cut without other pretreatment was suspended in pH 6.8 phosphate buffer, and inoculated by 10% volume of mixed thermophiles under (semi-) anaerobic conditions at60 °C. After 6 days cultivation the most part of oligomers was utilized by bacteria, and polysaccharides partially decomposed to oligomers, as shown by gel permeation analysis (GPC). The most part of hemicellulose (as estimated by mild hydrolysis as reducing sugars) was utilized. The residual material after thermophilic treatment was more accessible (in comparision with original one) to mesophilic mixed rumen flora.
