The collection of genetic sources of spring barley held by the Agricultural Research Institute Kroměříž, Ltd., is widened by new additions each year. The newly gained genetic sources of barley are tested in three-year cycles, during which their economic, biological and morphological characteristics as well as their potential utilizabibility for growing and cultivation of new varieties are tested. The REML program and the Statistica 7.0 statistical software were used for the statistical analysis of the results. The results received from 113 of spring barley varieties grown in the area around Kroměříž during 2003 to 2005 proved a progress especially in yields and percentage of sieving fractions above 2.5 mm of the new malting varieties originating mainly from Central and Western Europe. A considerable difference in individual genetic sources of barley has been confirmed. The barley materials with a different type of ear row-arrangement and a different coverage of the grain being grown in our soil and climatic conditions have shown differences as compared against conventional two-row covered varieties. The obtained data has confirmed the effect of type and origin on the important characteristics of the varieties from the malting point of view, such as water absorption during the steeping process, the protein content in grains and malt extract as well as on known relations among them. The collection of genetic sources of spring barley held by the Agricultural Research Institute Kroměříž, Ltd., is widened by new additions each year.
