The problem of scaling up is associated with the search of satisfactory method for cases where mass transfer occurs. Geometrically similar line of fermentors is a rare case - items for succesful scale-up are Re, Tmix, P/V, impeller tip velocity and KLa. Relevant is the application of KLa connected with OTR depending on hydrodynamical behaviour and OUR. Succesful work requires cooperation and integration of microbiologists (strain selection, determination of optimum production conditions) and chemical enginers. Important is the knowledge of factors related to formation of product. Experiments should be carried out in fully monitored, highly instrumented vessels with application of mathematical models and simulation studies.
