The article deals with various devices employed in breweries for conveying spent grains which are a waste product of brewing industry, but at the same time an excellent and valuable stock feed. The PONDORF combined mechanical and pneumatic system installed in many breweries abroad is analysed from economical point of view. The author relates the costs of conveying grains to 1 hl of beer and compares two transporting media, viz. air and steam. Description is given of a special pump which has recently been developed at the ZVÚ Works at Hradec Králové for hydraulic grains conveying system. The pump is designed to handle efficiently heterogenous mixtures containing both colloid and coarse components. In pipes line, colloid particles form a suspension, whereas coarser concentrate in the bottom part of the pipe.
