The authors have developed a new time saving method for the determination of five principal fractions of hop resins in hops, dry hop preparations hop extract and residue left after evaporation of miscella in the hop extract manufacturing process. The principle of the method is based on mixing extraction by means of cold methanol, gravimetric determination of total amount of resins and separately of soft resins and finally spectrophotometric determination of bitter hop resins. The method has many advantages: it is convenieat and simple, requires little time, is safe gives reliable results and requires easily available laboratory equipment. One analysis takes no more than 60 minutes. Errors do not exceed tolerances accepted by existing standards. The method can be recommended for routine analyses in laboratories, at plants making hop extracts or other hop preparation, as well breweries.
