Assessing the efficiency of various defoamers.Peer-reviewed article

L. ADÁMEK, F. ŠTROS

To assess the efficiency of various defoamers used in aerobic cultivation of microorganisms a fermentation test can be recommended for its simplicity. It consists essentially of cultivation under standard conditions of microorganisms lasting 6 hours and of automatic metering of defoamer. The defoaming activity is expressed as an efficiency coefficient, i.e. as a ratio of  specific consumption of pure oleic to the consumption of the given defoamer. It indicates, how many times the defoamer in question is more efficient than oleic acid. The relative character of the ration ensures good reproducibility of tests. The authors present efficiency coeffficients for a number of frequently used sorts of dofoamers.
