A new time-saving method has been elaborated for sulphite waste liquor. It is based on adsorption gas chromatography on Porapak Q and requires injection [by means of a Hamilton syringe] of 4µl of distillate obtained from a sample of fermenting substance, into a CHROM 2 chromatograph fitted with a flame-ionization detector. In the first part of the article the authoress describes the design of a simple distilling apparatus which is used to prepare distillate from 10 ml samples. Following paragraphs deal with the technique of chromatographic determination, with the accuracy of the method and its reproducibility. The analysis takes 30 minutes. The comparison of the chromatographic method with pycnometric one shows that the specific properties of sulphite waste liquor have negative effects upon the reliability and accuracy of determination. The maximum mean error was 5,8% and the difference between the results given by the two mentioned methods did not exceed 5%.
