M. NETWICHOVÁ, J. HÉL

The quality of barley grown inSouth Moraviadeteriorated several years ago and now it does not meet the requirements of malting industry. The workers of industry and its research institute decided to take measures to improve the situation. Higher price is now paid for good malting barley as an incentive for cooperative and state-owned farms, quality of crop is systematically checked before and after harvest and best sorts and strains are being gradually selected. The article deals with the results of a large-scale test in which samples of barley from 82 fields were analyzed before and after harvest to assess the proportion of albumens. Samples were later analyzed once more in the laboratory of Research Institute of Brewing and Malting industries and used then to prepare malt. Data presented in a number of tables confirm that it is possible to grow inSouth Moraviahigh quality malting barley and to supply local malting plants producing the " Pilsen" type of malt.
