Production of secondary metabolites is determined by genes localized on chromosomes and also on extrachromosomal particles. The level of production is often determined by the amount of enzymes of secondary metabolism in cells. These enzymes are synthesized after exhaustion of rapidly utilizable source of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus. Their synthesis is often inhibited by metabolites produced by these enzymes. These products can also inhibit the activity of enzymes of primary metabolism as well as the activity of enzymes of secondary metabolism.
