Barley varieties registered in the Czech Republic in 2011.Peer-reviewed article

In 2011 following spring barley malting varieties were registered in the Czech Republic: Concerto, Monalisa, Jazz, Delphi, and Despina. The highest extract content was found in the variety Concerto (83.6 %). The varieties Monalisa, Concerto, and Despina exhibited a high level of proteolytic modification. Proteolytic modification in the varieties Jazz and Delphi was on the optimal level. Amylolytic modification and quality of wort given by the value of apparent final attenuation were in all the studied varieties on the optimal level. Botanically, barleys represent a separate genus of the grass ( Poaceae)family with total number of 45 taxa. This study describes the history of barley domestication and barley spread in the Old Word at the end of the last ice age and during the Holocene especially from an archaeobotanical point of view. This article describes the spread of wild barley Hordeum spontaneumand domestication conditions in the Near East and other regions of the Old World. The study then pays attention to a so-called Neolithic package with respect to morphological domestication of barley in the territory of the Near East and spread of this plant in southeastern Europe. The third part of the four-part historical account is devoted to the history of another Ostrava brewery, which was built in 1896-1897. Like the Strassmann brewery, this brewery went through the period of industrial revolution and prosperity, survived World War I and the economical crisis of the 30 s but did not survive the German occupation durimng World War II.
