The article sums up current knowledge of malting barley breeding work. The first part is, except of the brief description of barley Hordeum vulgare ssp. vulgare, its genetics and chromosomal map, focused on the process of selection work. Historical and currently used conventional methods are described (pedigree, population, combined population- pedigree, and early testing method) with their advantages and negative sides. The second part of the article first deals with the selection strategy for individual characters (yield, agricultural qualities, disease resistance, malting quality). Each feature is briefly described and an appropriate method of selection is given. It is followed by the description of modern methods of breeding work based on molecular genetics (molecular markers and transgenose utilization). The article sums up current knowledge of malting barley breeding work.
